Fat Thursday in Budapest: Five Spots for Great Donuts

If you are in Budapest this Fat Thursday you will have a blast. The whole city celebrates eating donuts and there are many quirky cafes serving delicious, fluffy, round gluttonous bites, decorated in happy colors, or filled with all kinds of creams and homemade marmalades. Here are five great spots to grab a donut and a cup of coffee tomorrow in Budapest. We are featuring Fánkterápia, The Donut Library, Mr.Funk, The Box Donut, and Fánki Donuts, but there are several other spots where you can celebrate this Fat Thursday. Also, do not forget the Farsangi Fánkfesztivál Donut Festival in the weekend.

Fánkterápia

The English translation of Fánkterápia is “donut therapy” and what better term to begin our donut tour of Budapest this Fat Thursday? In summer, they have plates with samples outside, where you can try before you buy. They offer other desserts, plus DIY lemonades, hot cocoa with marshmallows, and tasty treats for kids. The welcoming cafe has an outdoor terrace too.

The Donut Library

The Donut Library is one of the best choices for delicious, colorful donuts that come in all kinds of shapes, with various toppings. They have three branches in Budapest on Pozsonyi út 22., on Karinty Frigyes út 18., and on Károly krt. 7.. You can drop in for donuts with a cup of coffee, or to buy a box of treats. They have many imaginative, seasonal donuts that will make you smile.

Mr.Funk

Mr.Funk is located at Arany János u. 19-21 and it’s a beautiful place, full of joy de vivre. We love the decor, as much as we love their treats. A plus for this place is that they also serve bagels filled with savory produce, all fresh. They are quite creative, perfect foodie bites, great before you give into the gluttonous indulgence of a box of fluffy sugary donuts.

The Box Donut

The Box Donut is a franchise type of business. You will find a shop on Teréz krt. 62. Their donuts are usually squared, with some exceptions – like Valentine’s Day – when other shapes “dare” to invade the shelves. This shop also makes a killer hot chocolate topped with a mountain of whipped cream. They also have square bagels. Yum!

Fánki Donuts

We love Fánki Donuts on Nagymező u. 6 this season because their fluffy confectioneries look posh, reminding of decorations on carnival costumes. They also taste as good as they look. Plus: this cozy little cafe also has healthy cold pressed juices. It’s such a refreshing thing to give into temptation when you can sip a healthy beverage.
