Travel Alert: First West Nile Virus Case Confirmed in Crete

The first case in Crete, a 60-year-old man from Heraklion, was confirmed and is now in stable condition.

  • Greece has reported 91 West Nile virus cases and eight deaths in 2025
  • First case in Crete confirmed in Heraklion, involving a 60-year-old man
  • Patient was hospitalized at PAGNI with meningitis-like symptoms and is now stable
  • West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquito bites; prevention remains key

According to the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY), from the beginning of 2025 until October 1, a total of 91 domestic cases of West Nile virus have been recorded, with eight fatalities. Out of these, 73 patients developed central nervous system complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, or acute flaccid paralysis, while 18 had mild or asymptomatic infections.

EODY notes that the appearance of new cases in the coming weeks is considered likely, as mosquitoes remain active into early autumn.

First Case in Crete

On September 26, NeaKriti confirmed the island’s first case of West Nile virus. A 60-year-old man from a village in the Heraklion hinterland, suffering from a pre-existing hematological condition, was admitted to the University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) with symptoms resembling meningitis.

Doctors suspected a possible infection with the virus and, after testing, confirmed the diagnosis. The patient’s condition has since stabilized, and he is being treated in the Internal Medicine Clinic, out of danger.

What to Know About the Virus

  • Transmission: The virus spreads through mosquito bites after they feed on infected birds.
  • Seasonality: Most cases occur in late summer and early autumn, when mosquito activity is at its peak.
  • Incubation: Symptoms can appear between 2 and 14 days after infection.
  • Symptoms: While 80% of people exhibit no signs, others may develop symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, or rash. In rare cases, serious neurological issues arise.
  • High-Risk Groups: Elderly individuals, young children, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women are more vulnerable.
  • Prevention: Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and trousers, and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed.

Outlook

So far in 2025, cases have been reported in 40 municipalities across 22 regional units, including Heraklion. While most infections are mild, authorities stress the importance of preventive measures, especially as the season extends into October.

As Argophilia has already reported, Crete faces an unusually high number of mosquitoes this year, despite the launch of the island’s mosquito control program in March 2025. The persistence of the insects well into autumn has raised concern among both locals and health experts.

For Crete, where tourism and outdoor activities continue well into October, awareness and mosquito control are crucial in reducing the risk of further cases.

Tips for Visitors in Crete: Staying Safe from Mosquitoes

While the risk of contracting West Nile virus remains low, simple precautions make outdoor life safer:

  • Use repellent: Apply mosquito repellent on exposed skin, especially in the evening.
  • Dress smart: Wear long sleeves and light trousers when hiking or dining outdoors.
  • Check your stay: Keep balcony doors closed at night or use window screens where available.
  • Avoid standing water: Stay clear of stagnant pools where mosquitoes breed.
  • Sleep safely: In rural areas, mosquito nets can provide an extra layer of protection.

For most travelers, the risk of infection is minimal, but a little prevention goes a long way in ensuring peace of mind while enjoying Crete’s beaches, villages, and countryside.
