In January 2019, bulldozers will get to work for the construction of the new Kasteli Airport outside of Heraklion, Crete.
The Greek Secretary General of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Giorgos Dedes, announced that €10 million euros have been approved for expropriations. “We already have the approval of the contract for Kasteli Airport contract, by the Court of Auditors” he commented.
The new Heraklion Airport will reportedly cost in excess of €480 million euro according to the tender of the project. Slated to open by 2023, the new airport will replace the aging N. Kazantzakis terminal just outside the town
at Alikarnassos.
The new airport will include an E-class runway, 3,200 meters long, a parallel runway to the 23-meter-wide A-class runway, and provision for future construction and a second runway, three at least high-speed runways and two minimum connecting runways between the Airport and the Military Airport.
The Ariadne Airport Group consortium was declared the provisional winner of the international tender back in May 2017. The group is a joint venture formed by Greece-based Terna S.A. and New Delhi-headquartered GMR Airports Group. Back in April, Hill International has been selected as the independent engineer set to undertake works on the highly anticipated Kastelli airport project.
The project will also include airside facilities including a cargo terminal building and an apron area capable of initially housing 27 aircraft, 19 passenger gates as well as a commercial area within the main terminal building which will have the capacity to accommodate between 57,500 and 65,000 passengers a day at the start.
