For those unfamiliar with Crete, the island is a wondrous mix of mountain and seascapes unique in the world. And the sunsets! Well, Santorini has nothing on the island many think was once Atlantis. We found so many Instagram images from various points on Crete, but here are a few of the very best.

The Instagram below is taken from Anissa Beach in Hersonissos, just to the East of Heraklion.

In the extreme West of Crete, Falasarna is one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Where the end of Crete’s mountains meet the sea, a vast playground of perfect sand and aquamarine sea wait for sunseekers.

Chania Town’s lighthouse is as iconic a landmark as any on Crete. Sitting on the harbor at sunset can mark each day uniquely, if only by the colors playing on the harbor fixtures, the sky, and the sea.

Speaking of iconic, Balos Lagoon is one of the most photographed locations in all of Greece. Experience one sunset here, and take it with you your whole life. This place is AMAZING.

No mention of Crete’s treasures is complete without Malia, one of Europe’s most vibrant vacation playgrounds. Party central throughout Spring and Summer, the vast expanse of sand and sea here are nothing short of astonishing.

The mountains of Crete hold secrets no human has ever witnesses. The spiritual heart of the island is high up on Lassithi, above the clouds at Psiloritis, deep in the inaccessible regions of the White Mountains of Chania Prefecture, in the Asterousia Mountains overlooking the south coast and the Libyan Sea.

Crete has a soul that is expressed in nature, and then by the spirituality of the people who have lived here throughout the countless Millennium.

Sfakia. For those who have visited or have read the history, the name evokes a sense of deep awe. This is an unconquered land, a place where people maintain their traditions and uniqueness, and where remote natural wonders take your breath away.

And when the sun is finally gone, sitting atop the majestic Lassithi Plateau the stars come to visit. The plateau, which is essentially a gigantic bowl of a long extinct volcano, is one of Crete’s most beautiful and serene places. Go there, if you ever have the chance.
