The growth in tourism arrivals in Greece early in the 2019 season is double the world average according to data from the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations (UNWTO).
In the period starting January of 2019 until March, international touristic flows have slowed overall. According to the UNWTO figures, global arrivals increased only 4 percent, while Greece tourist numbers rose 7.8 percent compared to the first quarter of last year, reaching 1.926 million visitors, according to the numbers from the Bank of Greece.
Greece’s travel receipts in the year to end-March reached 760 million euros, showing an increase of 37.2 percent per annum, with the bulk of the quarter’s arrivals and receipts attributed to city break visitors.
Europe, the world’s largest tourism region, posted an annual increase of 4 percent as well, with destinations in Southern Europe such as Greece outperforming most other regions. International tourist arrivals in Europe reached 713 million in 2018, so other than the good news for Greece and the rest of southern Europe, the rest of the region seems to be stagnant.
Globally the biggest growth numbers were registered by the Caribbean (up 17 percent) and Africa (11 percent).
