5th Meeting for the Archaeological Work in Crete Going On in Rethymno

Starting today and running through the 24th in Rethymno, a meeting on archaeological progress on Crete takes place at the House of Culture in Old Town Rethymno. This fifth meeting for the discussion of archaeological work in Crete will bring forth some of the most fascinating finds in ancient Aegean archaeology.

Presented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rethymno and the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete, the event will welcome the public to observe the progress being made in the field.

The meetup will be one of the most impactful and complete presentations of archaeological progress anywhere in Europe in recent years. The list of experts is too lengthy for this announcement, but a few of the early presenters include; Dr. Theotokis Theodoulou, with an update on underwater and coastal archaeological research in Crete; as well as Dr. Athanasia Kanta and Dr. Anagnostis Agelarakis Anagnostis with an interim report on the Aposelemis Neolithic Cemetery.

Friday’s session will feature the latest research on Neolithic stratigraphy and chronology from Knossos; by Dr. Peter Tomkins. This will be followed by discussion/presentations by notable experts like ancient urbanist expert, Dr. Anna Moles; and political/social transition expert, Dr. Conor Trainor. Subsequent days and sessions will feature many of the world’s most knowledgable researchers from across the spectrum of archaeological inquiry on early Aegean antiquity.

Prominent experts on the palace at Phaistos will also be presenting at the 5th edition of the Archaeological Work in Crete, as well. A few of the noted archaeologists presenting include Dr. Jan Driessen, who’s Director of the Belgian School at Athens and the Sissi Archaeological Project; along with renowned author and archaeologist Dr. Simona Todaro. Dr. Florence Gaignerot-Driessen will also give an update on recent discoveries at Anavlochos in the Lassithi region of the island. Other researchers presenting include Dr. Adrianos Psychas, Dr. Alessandro Greco, Dr. Fausto Longo of the University of Salerno, Dr. Bjorn Forsen, and Dr. Anna Lucia D’Agata just to name a few.
