Invitation to Šibenik: Terraneo Festival for Ecologists

Šibenik is a stunning Croatian destination, a historic town located right where the Krka flows into the Adriatic Sea. It’s a popular destination, not only for its location, architecture and tourist attractions, but also for the varied entertainment programmes designed to appeal to travelers from all ways of life. One of these events is the Terraneo Festival, an open invitation to an active vacation at the former Bribirski knezovi barracks.

Terraneo is not just another summer festival...

It’s a mini-vacation that offers everything you imagined in terms of entertainment, history and nature. You’ll enjoy the Adriatic charm, and take in Croatian culture at its best. Visitors get to participate in workshops, lectures, one-day tours to some of the most beautiful sights in the region, and seal it all off with a beautiful environmental story.

Terraneo features five days of music, with bands performing on three different stages, and DJs spinning in two hangars that were once used by the military. The concerts begin at 17:00 every day, and last late in the night.

Among the participants we mention The Fall (image) La Roux, Destroyer, Dubioza kolektiv, Chad VanGaalen, Suuns, Tetkine Radosti, Eddie Ramich, Ilija Rudman, Jogarde, Nipple People, Bamwise, Mark Mraković, Big Mandrake and many others.

The pride of Šibenik is the St. Nicholas Fortress, one of the most valuable and best preserved examples of defense architecture in Dalmatia.

You’ll get to see this monumental brick structure, along with Šibenik’s other three fortresses, and the Kornati National Park, a heaven of 109 islands in the Mediterranean Sea.

Last, but not least, you will enjoy the splendors of the Krka National Park waterfalls, just a few kilometers northeast of the city.

Terraneo only lasts five days, August 9 - 13, 2011. Expect these days to be full of action, and expect to meet people from all over the world, camping around the Bribirski knezovi barracks.

Obviously, the camping is the most exciting facility of the open air festival. The Terraneo camp can accommodate up to several thousand people with an affordable price of 15€ for a five-day camping ticket. The camping offers excellent conditions, with facilities including toilets, showers, washbasins and running water, as well as battery and mobile phone chargers and property lock-up. However, if you prefer hotel accommodation, there are enough options in Šibenik, at a higher price, of course.

Budget travelers will enjoy Villa Katarina near the beach in Trogir and close to Cipiko Palace, Kamerlengo Fortress, and Trogir Main Square.

Or you could splurge at Solaris Hotel Ivan, on the beach, close to Krapanj Franciscan Monastery, Cathedral of St. Jacob, and Zlarin.

The environmental story that crowns the event relates the journey of Terry the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Terraneo’s trademark. The Loggerhead Sea Turtle, a once widespread turtle species, is now on the verge of extinction due to pollution, illegal hunting, mass tourism, coastal areas over-development, and so on. One of the festival highlights will be the work of the Marine turtles rescue centre, a very active Croatian institution. Other ecologic programmes and aspects will be discussed in an unobtrusive manner during the festival. To make a long story short, Šibenik’s Terraneo is one of the most beautiful, inspirational events you’ll ever witness.

  • Must go !I was here and it is simply majestic. Nice and quiet if you want. Noisy too, but it has the best of both worlds. I am biased because all I need is a pair of flippers + snorkel and the water. nothing else matters. Better than any pool - any.
