Speleological Club of Crete Beginner Session 2018

Coming up in March, the Speleological Club of Crete (CP.The.K.) will offer the 18th annual speleology seminar for beginners. Experts from the club will begin conducting lessons on theoretical and practical speleology from March 7th through May 23rd, 2018.  7/3 to 23/5/2018.

The aim of the club is to initiate new trainees in speleological exploration and study of the extremely rich underground world of Crete. Some of the topics to be covered are: Data speleology, geology. materials, methods of mapping. man caves, hazards in the caves, a tour of speleological .missions, and first aid. The practical part will include a one-day or two-day educational excursion to geologically interesting areas and caves, as well as a practice session in techniques for single rope vertical ascent and descent.

For those unfamiliar with caving on Crete, caves have always been part of Crete mythology and history, since the birth of Zeus. Since then speleologists have recorded more than 3500 caves on the island, many of which being of great archaeological, paleontological and historical interest. Cretans have used these caves as places of worship and as dwellings since Paleolithic Era, and it was the Minoans who worshiping their gods in small palatial or house shrines, in sacred caves and in shrines built on mountain peaks.

The seminar is designed for trainees 18  years of age and older. No prior experience is needed, but there is a limit of 12 persons for each session.
