Sochi 2014 Update: Security, Security, Security

News from Sochi, Russian Railways said yesterday the introduction of additional security safeguards will be placed at entrances to some 32 train stations across Russia in anticipation of the Olympics.

According to the Moscow Times account of the story, high speed rail stations serving Sapsan and Allegro trains between Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Vyborg, along with other major stations like Sochi and Adler near the games, are to be affected.

President Vladimir Putin’s tight focus on security for the Olympics has been nearly continually in the news. While military exercises in the Black Sea recently were categorized by western press as some sort of military detente, in reality Putin’s administration seems extremely virulent to suggest these games will be the securest in recent times.

Meanwhile, the Sochi local government continually adds added security measures to go along with infrastructure building in support of the games next year. Security cameras and monitoring equipment were in the city news today.  Vulnerable spots in Sochi, such as the substation “Kubanenergo”, will be under tight surveillance. Real time security staff will be monitoring round the clock this and many other areas where security forces might need be directed. In the end, thousands of cameras are being installed to monitor what amounts to every square inch of security sensitive territory in Sochi.
