One Step at a Time: The Heraklion Urban Landscape Rejuvenated

Via Heraklion Municipality

Another amazing Heraklion playground was inaugurated last week at the junction of Itanos and Kalamas streets (near the Aghia Anna Temple). Mayor of Heraklion, Vasilis Labrinos, along with members of the municipal authority were present with a crowd of onlookers, parents, and Heraklion children at play at the new facility.

In keeping with the city’s program of modernization of playgrounds and civic spaces, this newest effort includes innovative games accessible to the disabled as well. Mayor Lambrinou had this to say at the event:

“We are continuing the work of rebuilding and certifying the playgrounds of Heraklion in progress for some time now. We believe that creating safe and modern gaming venues in the city is extremely important. This is why we have dedicated to seeing to it that all of them are certified.”

Heraklion and other towns on Crete actually have amazing facilities for young people, except that the economic crisis has caused some to fall into disrepair. This is generally true of all civic facilities, to be honest. So, it’s great to see officials taking measures to one-by-one refurbish valuable civic assets.

Mayor Lambrinou is in a heated battle for re-election, has presented a comprehensive plan 2019 – 2023 for Heraklion civic improvement that includes the implementation of the strategic integrated urban intervention (P.The.A.P) and sustainable urbanization.
