Each year in May, on the last Monday of the month Americans all over the world celebrate Memorial Day, in remembrance of fallen Union soldiers during the American Civil War, and all US military casualties ever since.

This year, Memorial Day falls on the May 30, which means this weekend is the perfect opportunity to get away and have a special time with your families.  And so just in the nick of time, here are Argophilia’s top five most beautiful Memorial Day Destinations.

#5 Williamsburg, Virginia – One of the most historically important cities in the US, Williamsburg is the perfect place to get in touch with the true spirit of Memorial Day 2011. The city played a pivotal role in the Civil War and as a result it’s the venue of one of the most exciting Memorial Day celebrations in the country.

In fact, the celebrations have already kicked off, with the Festival Williamsburg bursting into life this Friday. Memorial events include musicians, orchestras and performing acts entertaining the crowds at Colonial Williamsburg, while the more than 500 restored 18th century buildings make for a truly wonderful setting.

#4 Big Sky, Montana – The state of Montana may conjure up images of lonely cowboys riding off into the sunset, but pay a visit to Big Sky  you’ll soon change your way of thinking. Big Sky is a beautiful year round destination just perfect for a romantic getaway, with stunning mountain views and miles of trails that offer unparalleled beauty.

Get your hiking boots on and get outside to see nature at its best at Big Sky this Memorial Day weekend – then at the end of the day, treat yourself to a relaxing spa and massage at the Solace Spa resort.

#3 Hilton Head, South Carolina – While it may boast of its year round beauty, Hilton Head really comes into its own in the summertime – its pleasant weather and gorgeous seaside appeal acting like a magnet for hundreds of tourists looking for a special Memorial Day vacation.

There are few places in America quite like Hilton Head, which offers a unique blend of island hospitality and southern charm. And there’s plenty to do as well – you can enjoy a round of golf or go for something more adventurous like kayaking through the island’s beautiful marshlands, or simply head down to the beach and spend the weekend soaking up the sun.

#2 Sedona, Arizona – Looking for a little pick-me-up this Memorial Day weekend? Then you could do a lot worse than head on down to Sedona, which has become a spiritual Mecca due to the supposed mystical healing energies emanating from its majestic red rock scenery. Book into a spa, join a yoga session or enjoy a reinvigorating massage and soak up the magical essence of Sedona

Even leaving aside the hippie stuff, Sedona has much to offer, with its evergreen vegetation, mesmerizing rock formations and breathtaking mountain vistas – what more could you ask for?

#1 Lake Tahoe, Nevada – Right on the border with California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe has always been one of our most desirable destinations, a true vacation wonderland regardless of the time of year. Lake Tahoe offers an abundance of activities this Memorial Day – unsurpassed hiking in the hills, mountain biking, boating out on the lake – all in one of the most beautiful settings America has to offer.

To cap it off, pay a visit the town Stateline and its casinos in the evening, have a little gamble and enjoy a thoroughly unforgettable weekend.
