A lava eruption at Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano continues after officials elevated the volcano’s “ash alert” status to its highest level.

Bardarbunga, Iceland’s largest volcanic system, is some 190 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide in some places. So far the more recent seismic and volcanic activity in the system has witnesses some thousands of small earthquakes, and now the latest lava flows.
Dramatic lava eruptions on Sunday shot molten rock some 50 meters into the air above the volcano. While lava continues to pour from the fissure eruption, officials in Iceland say the volcano has so far not ejected ask that would impeded airline traffic.
Fears for a repeat of Eyjafjallajokull volcano’s massive disruption of airline routes have prompted much discussion about the dangers of Bardarbunga . As yet, those dangers have not been realized much to the delight of major airlines and associated businesses.
