Heraklion Carnival 2025 Kicks Off with a Treasure Hunt

Heraklion’s Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos inaugurated the 22nd Treasure Hunt on Feb 16, uniting locals of all ages in a vibrant carnival celebration.

  • Heraklion Carnival 2025 starts with a treasure hunt that mixes playful traditions with community pride.
  • Kudos to the organizers for bringing together people of all ages.
  • Mayor Kalokairinos knows how to throw just enough sap into a speech.
  • This isn’t just about treasure; it’s about building a stronger connection to the city.

A City That’s the Real Treasure (Spoiler: It’s also the People)

On February 16, Heraklion threw a party—and not just any party. The Lodge Atrium became a buzzing hub of excitement as Heraklionians of all ages kicked off the 22nd edition of the Treasure Hunt. Led by the city’s Mayor, Alexis Kalokairinos, the event segued into the final stretch of the Carnival festivities, promising non-stop fun until February 23, when the much-anticipated parade of carnival teams will take over the streets.

This year’s Treasure Hunt has a quirky twist, themed “The Abduction of Dina.” What exactly is Dina being abducted from, or why? No one knows—but does it matter? The hundreds gathered Sunday morning didn’t need much convincing as the Mayor officially got the game underway in the presence of Deputy Mayors Giorgos Tsangarakis (Social Support) and Rena Papadaki (Culture).

Standing amidst the lively crowd, Kalokairinos shared a heartfelt yet oddly motivational pep talk. In his speech, he emphasized the value of discovering and caring for the city’s treasures—both hidden corners and the community itself. “The city is a treasure, full of hidden gems,” he proclaimed, “but you, the people, are its greatest treasure.” Then, he threw in the usual small-town politician charm by applauding everyone involved in keeping the event alive—from volunteers and municipal workers to emergency response teams. Classic.

Carnival Chaos Meets Civic Pride

The Treasure Hunt didn’t just provide entertainment. Kalokairinos hinted (read: gently nagged) about rediscovering Heraklion’s rich character while respecting its laws. Yes, participants were reminded to stick to traffic rules. No treasure is worth your car insurance skyrocketing.

The Mayor also gave a shoutout to key players ensuring the event’s success, including the police, fire department, ambulance services, and oh-so-dedicated volunteers. A good chunk of the closing speech sounded like your standard “we’d like to thank the Academy” speech—but hey, points for teamwork.

Looking at the crowd, packed with excited kids and equally giddy adults, it’s hard to deny the day itself was a success. Between the themed games, community spirit, and cultural exploration, everyone left with a deeper love for the city—Kalokairinos’ ultimate goal. Or maybe just a better appreciation for Dina.
