What initially appeared to be the arrest of a young passenger carrying drugs into Crete is rapidly developing into a wider investigation into a suspected international cannabis trafficking ring.
Greek authorities are examining the mobile phone of a 22-year-old Spanish woman arrested at Heraklion’s Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport on Thursday, July 23, hoping it will help identify other members of the network—including a man known only as Max, whom investigators believe coordinated the operation from abroad.
Police suspect the woman was acting as a courier rather than an organizer.
Intelligence-Led Operation
The arrest was anything but routine.
According to the Heraklion Narcotics Unit, investigators had received intelligence indicating that a young woman arriving from Barcelona would be carrying a large quantity of cannabis destined for distribution in Greece.
Officers were already waiting at the airport when the early morning charter flight landed on Thursday. The suspect was intercepted shortly after leaving the aircraft, while police traced her checked suitcase through the baggage system.
The operation comes during one of the busiest weeks of Crete’s tourist season, when police have strengthened their presence at Heraklion Airport as part of enhanced summer security measures. Authorities stressed, however, that the arrest resulted from targeted intelligence rather than a routine baggage inspection.
Locked Suitcase, Nearly 20 Kilograms of Cannabis
Investigators say the woman refused to provide the security code needed to open her suitcase, claiming it had been handed to her already locked and that she did not know what it contained.
Officers eventually forced the luggage open.
Inside, they found 19.1 kilograms of hydroponically cultivated cannabis (skunk) packed into two large packages. The drugs have an estimated street value of approximately €80,000.
Police also seized €210 in cash and the suspect’s mobile phone.
A One-Day Trip Raises Questions
According to local reports, investigators believe the 22-year-old was operating as a drug courier.
She reportedly arrived in Heraklion carrying little more than the clothes she was wearing, with the suitcase containing almost nothing except the cannabis. Police believe she intended to hand over the luggage before returning to Barcelona on another charter flight the following day.
Whether she knew the full scope of the alleged operation remains part of the ongoing investigation.
Phone Data Could Lead to More Arrests
Detectives are now focusing on the suspect’s mobile phone, which they believe contains valuable information about the trafficking network.
According to local media, investigators have already identified references to another Spanish national known as “Max,” who is suspected of directing the courier’s movements and coordinating the shipment.
Authorities believe the phone could help identify additional members of what they describe as a well-organized international drug trafficking operation.
The 22-year-old is expected to appear before the competent judicial authorities as the investigation continues.
