Peaceful Summertime Days in Golubac on the Banks of the Danube

The picturesque setting of Golubac heals the soul.

Golubac is a destination for people who love nature, history, and the glorious outdoors. The village lies on the Serbian shores of the Danube, across the border from Coronini in Romania.

The picturesque setting of Golubac heals the soul. The Danube flows peacefully at its northern boundary and the Golubac Fortress reflects its fortified walls in its waters since the 14th century when it was an important defense point. Today, the walls stand as one of the most spectacular man-made sights of the Golubac region, something travelers enjoy photographing more than anything else.

Golubac is a favorite sailing spot of the Serbian Sailing Association, which organizes a popular summer regatta here – a pleasure to watch if you happen to be in the area. The boats slide on the Danube in a natural landscape full of charm. Sitting down at a waterfront terrace watching the sails against the blue backdrop of the skies is one of those summer pastimes that feel your heart with glee.

Fishing is another pastime that attracts travelers to Golubac. Some line on the pier in the village, others take their boats on the Danube or find quiet, secluded places, to enjoy the serenity of nature and the silence.

The Djerdap National Park‎, which is the natural setting for the village, offers nature trails for hiking and biking. The park stretches from the Golubac Fortress to the dam at Sip. The park itself is rich in attractions, both natural and manmade: archeological sites, historical monuments, lakes, gorges, and rich fauna. The views are spellbinding.

All things considered, Golubac may be a great choice for your summer bucket list this year. The village is small, peaceful, and although the center is not the most appealing part of the destination, there are lovely guesthouses in beautiful natural settings that provide a secluded shelter for a vacation far from the crowds.
