The Regional Committee of Crete has approved €398,520 in funding for two road safety projects across the Rethymno regional road network.
The committee made the decisions at its September 7, 2026 meeting, and they cover road improvement work in the municipalities of Rethymno, Agios Vasilios, and Amari.
The two projects are:
- Road Safety Improvements in the Rethymno–Agios Vasilios Municipal Areas, with a budget of €248,520 including VAT.
- Road Safety Improvements in the Amari Municipal Area, with a budget of €150,000 including VAT.
The work will focus on some of the less glamorous parts of road infrastructure that become extremely important when Crete’s weather turns nasty.
Planned interventions include clearing drainage ditches and roadside slopes, improving rainwater drainage, addressing dangerous road sections, asphalt repairs and road markings.
Work Planned Along the Rethymno–Spili–Agia Galini Road
The larger of the two projects also includes targeted interventions along Provincial Road 3, connecting Rethymno with Spili and Agia Galini, in areas of the Armeni Municipal Unit.
The work there will focus on locations where water runoff creates problems, aiming to improve drainage and make the road safer.
Rethymno Regional Deputy Governor Maria Lioni said road safety remains a priority for the Region of Crete and the Rethymno regional unit.
She said the projects aim to address problems affecting both road safety and residents’ daily movement, highlighting drainage improvements, work at dangerous points, asphalt repairs, and new road markings.
Lioni also emphasized the interventions planned along Provincial Road 3 in the Armeni area, where drainage issues will be addressed.
The Region said it will continue implementing interventions across the Rethymno provincial road network, using available funding to improve infrastructure and road safety.
€398,520 sounds substantial, but the details matter. This is not a single road reconstruction project. It is a package of targeted maintenance and safety interventions spread across several areas, including the Rethymno–Spili–Agia Galini route and the wider Amari area.
For drivers, the most immediately relevant work includes drainage improvements, repairs at dangerous points, asphalt interventions, and road markings. In Crete, keeping water off the road is no minor detail.
