A 72-year-old Danish tourist died on Monday afternoon after being pulled unconscious from the sea at Agia Marina, Chania.
The Chania Port Authority’s Port Department was alerted after reports that a man was in difficulty in the sea off Agia Marina. Lifeguards at the beach had already reached the man and pulled him from the water. He was found unconscious.
First aid was administered at the scene before an EKAV ambulance transported him to Chania General Hospital.
Despite the efforts that followed, the man’s death was confirmed at the hospital.
The A’ Port Department of the Central Port Authority of Chania is conducting the preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
An autopsy and forensic examination have also been ordered by the Forensic Service of Crete to establish the exact cause of death.
The incident occurred Monday afternoon at Agia Marina, where a lifeguard responded to a swimmer in difficulty and brought him ashore. The man was subsequently transported to Chania General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
