Must See in Crete This October: First Ever Cretan Union Cup Sailing Regatta

On December 1, 2013, Crete celebrates 100 years since the raising of the Greek flag at the fort of Firka, which mark the union of the Island with Greece. The locals marked the centenary with various cultural and artistic events, all throughout the year, and continue to celebrate enthusiastically till the end of 2013, with festivals, competitions, and other manifestations that reveal the soul of the Island and authentic local traditions.

The local yacht clubs and the Region of Crete celebrate 100 years of the Cretan Union with Greece by organizing the first ever “Cretan Union Cup.” The event takes place on the North coast of Crete (Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos) beginning October 14, 2013, till October 20, 2013.

Organizers are: the Nautical Club Gaziou Crete, the Nautical Club of Chania, the Sailing Club of Chania, the Sailing Club of Rethymno, the Sailing Club of Heraklion, the Sailing Club of Ag. Nikolaos, and the Nautical Club of Sitia. The event is supervised by the Hellenic Sailing Federation and the Region of Crete.

The sailing regatta is attended by athletes from all over the world, with boats with overall length equal or greater than 7 meters in one of the following classes: ORC International; IRC; Classic & Vintage Yachts; ORC Club; Charter Boat (ORC Club Non spinnaker boats).

The “Cretan Union Cup” is one of the most important events that mark the centenary of the Cretan Union with Greece. The event is sponsored by local businesses, and hotels. Some of the sponsors are offering additional prizes to the winners. For example, Lato Boutique Hotel in Heraklion will be rewarding the winner with a stay at the hotel, in a premium executive suite. Other prizes include cocktail parties at Herb’s Garden, luncheon at Brillant Restaurant, etc.
