Breathtaking Carnival of Venice, in Images by Eugen Mihai

The theme of the 2011 Carnival of Venice was “Ottocento – Da Senso a Sissi – La Citta Delle Donne” – a tribute to 150 years since the Unification of Italy, and to women, whose international day follows tomorrow, March 8, when the carnival concludes with a silent regatta of row boats along the Canal Grande, that will be illuminated only with candles, in a suggestive rejoining of the city with itself. Embarking at Rialto, in front of Ca’ Farsetti (City Hall in Rialto), from 11:15 pm.

As every year, the carnival saw a stunning display of traditional costumes, each a work of art, as glorious, romantic and memorable as the city that hosted the carnival. Argophilia had the fortune of receiving a number of post-card gorgeous images from the carnival, from award-winning Romanian photographer Eugen Mihai, who spent a few days enjoying Venetian magic this week. A few drops of this magic come today your way, in the images below.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is fairest of all?

A tribute to Italian women, and women everywhere, who celebrate tomorrow March 8, the International Women Day.

Venice discovered in 2011 the vibrant soul of its “theme” Carnival: “Ottocento”, the nineteenth century evocation.

The Carnival of Venice culminates March 8, the International Women Day.

The Carnival will be closed on 8th March with a silent water parade of row boats along the Canal Grande, that will be illuminated only with candles, in a suggestive rejoining of the city with itself.

Two perfect candidates for the 2011 Best Masked Costume contest.
