Incorporating the Hotel Sustainability Basics (HSB) framework from the industry association into its platform, BeCause makes the sustainability journey easier for travel and hospitality professionals. The startup revolutionises how the global hotel, travel, and tourist sectors manage sustainability data. The WTTC Hotel, Sustainability Basics Framework, will now be an accessible resource within the BeCause sustainability data management platform.

Thanks to the collaboration, WTTC (World Travel & Tourism Council) can expand its Hotel Sustainability Basics program and make a bigger splash in the hospitality sector.

Sustainability is a priority for Travel & Tourism. Through the Hotel Sustainability Basics, the global hotel industry has come together to define 12 fundamental, globally aligned sustainability criteria that all hotels can and should implement as a bare minimum. Our goal is to have a globally recognized trademark that shows customers at a glance that a hotel is taking measures to improve its environmental performance while also supporting its local community. By joining forces with BeCause we are increasing the transparency of that process and giving hotel groups an effective and efficient way to put that tool into the hands of their properties.

The worldwide organisation can better advocate for more sustainable hotel operations on a global scale by consolidating pertinent data within the BeCause platform. This will provide a clearer picture of which hotels have finished the framework and which ones are falling behind. Hotel chains’ management may also keep tabs on how each property is doing regarding sustainability and offer them the resources they need to succeed.

The BeCause Advantage for Hoteliers

BeCause is an industry-specific, AI-powered platform designed to centralise a hotel’s sustainability data and automate the transmission of that data among various stakeholders, such as travel and accommodation booking marketplaces and industry certifications. Once a hotel enters its data into the BeCause platform, it can be repurposed and automatically mapped to multiple frameworks, expediting the process of qualifying for voluntary green certifications while ensuring regulatory compliance.

In a nutshell:

  • BeCause automates data transmission to verification partners
  • Hotels can reuse existing data for the HSB framework on the BeCause platform
  • BeCause centralises sustainability data and automates transmission
  • Data can be mapped to multiple frameworks for certifications and compliance

Taking Hotels on a Sustainable Path

Hotels that embrace sustainable practices have a three-year window to meet the 12 criteria set forth by the HSB framework. These criteria encompass various sustainability indicators, such as energy measurement and linen reuse programs. Hotels can annually apply for Hotel Sustainability Basics (HSB) verification through WTTC’s partners, Green Key and SGS. Successful verification grants them a badge that can be prominently displayed across their branding to appeal to the growing number of environmentally conscious guests.

BeCause will streamline this process in the future by automatically transmitting data from its platform directly to the verification partners. Hotels already utilising BeCause to manage their sustainability data can reuse their existing and overlapping data points for the HSB framework, eliminating the need for duplicative and manual tasks.

Key points:

  • Hotels have three years to meet 12 sustainability criteria under the HSB framework
  • Criteria include energy measurement and linen reuse programs
  • Hotels can apply for HSB verification through Green Key and SGS partners
  • Successful verification grants a badge for branding and appealing to eco-conscious guests
