Stop the presses: Crete is getting 10 kilometers of new VOAK. Yes, ten. After decades of promises, studies, tenders, delays, and political speeches, the island is apparently expected to celebrate a road segment you can drive in about ten minutes. Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas announced at Prodexpo 2026 in Athens that the first 10 kilometers of Crete's new Northern Road Axis (VOAK), between Agios Nikolaos and Neapoli, are expected to open to traffic before the end of October. Ten kilometers. We assume the ribbon will be suitably long. Ten Kilometers Down. How Many to Go? To be fair, the opening is part of a much larger project meant to transform Crete's notoriously inadequate northern road network. The VOAK has been described by the minister as one of Greece's last major outstanding motorway projects. Which makes the announcement slightly surreal. Because after all these years, the great Northern Road Axis of Crete is still being measured in tiny celebratory portions. The Agios Nikolaos–Neapoli section is moving ahead, while work on the Neapoli–Hersonissos section, being delivered through a public-private partnership, is also progressing. For the Kissamos–Heraklion concession, studies and planning have begun. Road-safety interventions are also underway, along with work on the bypasses of Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion. So yes, much more is happening than ten kilometers, but we are opening ten kilometers. Celebrating Incremental Progress For a highway infamously dubbed a modern deathtrap, celebrating a single stretch of tarmac barely long enough for a morning jog feels like a cruel punchline. While the wider VOAK concession spanning Kissamos to Heraklion remains bogged down in endless studies, detour maintenance, and bureaucratic red tape, officials are patting themselves on the back for completing a microscopic fraction of the island's primary artery. Meanwhile, work on the much-touted new international airport in Kasteli crawls forward. Dimas reported that construction is 74% complete, with aviation navigation contracts signed and an official launch date penciled in for November 2028. Yet, as local stakeholders repeatedly point out, dropping a state-of-the-art mega-airport into the Cretan countryside without a functioning, modern highway network to service it is a recipe for catastrophic gridlock. National Projects Take Center Stage During his discussion with Colliers Greece Partner Ioannis Orfanos, Dimas broadened the scope to national priorities, pointing to upcoming relief valves in Attica—such as the Metamorfousi interchange overhaul and the Skaramagas triple junction designed to pull heavy trucks out of urban centers—alongside the 70% completion mark of Thessaloniki's controversial FlyOver project. He also touched upon international trade routes, highlighting a new memorandum signed with Bulgaria and Romania to connect Greek ports like Thessaloniki and Kavala to the Black Sea. Yet back on Crete, where recent severe storms have washed away roads and left communities isolated, the contrast between grand ministerial presentations in Athens and the gritty reality of driving on the island couldn't be starker. Ten kilometers of new road is a start, but until the rest of the VOAK leaves the PowerPoint slide and hits the asphalt, Cretan drivers and visitors will keep holding their breath.
