Crete is on orange weather alert today, Wednesday, October 14, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and locally very strong winds expected to continue until late tonight. All Civil Protection services across the island are on alert, with particular concern about possible flooding.
🚨 If you are in danger, call:
- 112 — European Emergency Number
- 199 — Fire Service
- 100 — Greek Police
- 108 — Hellenic Coast Guard
- 166 — EKAB ambulance service
Flood risk is the main concern
The Region of Crete urges residents and visitors to take extra care, as intense rainfall could cause flooding, especially in areas where large amounts of water accumulate quickly.
Anyone in or near a potentially flooded area should move away from basements, streams, torrents, and low-lying areas immediately if water levels begin to rise.
Authorities are also advising people to avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the weather, both by car and on foot.
Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or streams. What looks like a shallow flow can become dangerous very quickly.
Orange alert remains in effect through tonight
The deteriorating weather is expected to continue until late Wednesday night.
The main features are:
- Locally heavy rain and thunderstorms
- Potential flooding from intense rainfall
- Locally very strong northerly and north-northeasterly winds
- Dangerous conditions along exposed coastal areas
Residents are being urged to adjust their plans according to the weather and follow instructions issued by the authorities.
Stay away from the sea and exposed areas
The strong winds create an additional risk, particularly along the coast and in exposed outdoor areas.
The Region of Crete advises against sea-related activities and recommends avoiding coastal zones and outdoor activities while the strongest winds are affecting the island.
Extra caution is needed around unsecured objects, trees and other structures that could be affected by powerful wind gusts.
Civil Protection services on standby across Crete
All services participating in the Region of Crete’s Civil Protection mechanism have been placed on alert.
Their priority is protecting human life and responding to problems caused by the severe weather.
Residents and visitors should rely on official announcements rather than rumors or social-media speculation, particularly as conditions can change rapidly.
