A magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit off the western coast of Crete at just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27th. The powerful subsea quake was felt strongly for almost half a minute here in Heraklion at 9:25 a.m. We are awaiting reports from Kissamos and Chania Prefecture.
Hours after a major event tore at Albania, the Crete earthquake centered 27 miles west of Kissamos, was felt as far away as Turkey. At a relatively shallow depth of 92 kilometers (6.6 miles), the tremor shook villages and towns all across the island.
The USGS shakemap and other reports show widespread, but moderate felt effects on land, with most of the effects in Chania Prefecture. There has, so far, been no tsunami warning issued.
I spoke briefly with Nikos Chourdakis, who is the sub-commander of Kissamos Fire and Rescue, and he said there are currently no reports of problems in the region.
The big tremor comes a day after western Albania was devastated by a powerful quake that killed 21 and injured hundreds.
