Late last month the Kaiafas Thermal Springs reopened following renovations on amazing Kaiafas Lake. Known since antiquity for its health benefits, the springs will now be open continuously from early morning until 20:30 each evening.
According to the State Property Company (ETAD), the springs can now remain open continuously from 08.30 to 20.30, including Sundays and holidays through mid-November.
The renovated center Kaiafas Thermal Springs includes an open-air pool, a hydrotherapy center, kinesiotherapy treatments, 13 private bathtubs, and more. The nearby Kaiafas Forest, and the marvelous Kaiafas Beach adjacent complete the idyllic setting of the springs.
The water of these springs flows from caves at the foot of Lapitha Mountain just East of Kaifas Lagoon. Myth has it that the caves were home to the Anigrid Nymphs. The healing waters of the springs are at a temperature of 30.9 degrees Celsius (87.62F), and offer benefits to people suffering from chronic rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, skin conditions, and neuralgia, to name a few.
The operation of the Kaiafas Thermal Springs began back in 1907 when the railway line opened to Kaiafas. Today, the springs are connected by a bus line and a highway. From the 1960s until 1999, the baths belonged to the Greek Tourist Organization, but today they are managed by State Property Company (ETAD).
The Anigrides Nymphes spring has a sodium hydrochloride composition with free hydrogen sulfide in large quantities. The cave (spring) is divided into two parts, the large and the small cave. At the large one, the temperature ranges from 32C to 35C, while at the small one, is from 29C to 34C.
