Wintertime Is Spa Time in Hungary

Though Hungary is not blessed with the towering mountains that make many Eastern European locales choice destinations for Winter sports, it has its own secret weapon. The thin crust of the earth beneath Budapest allows healing streams of hot water to flow throughout the city. A naturally occurring phenomenon, Turkish-style baths here are ideal destinations for some much needed spa time.

The Wintertime is ideal for experience the baths and spas of Hungary. Many local residents utilize these spas on a routine basis, especially those with muscle pains, breathing difficulties, arthritis, and other ailments. Enjoying these baths is not a uniquely Hungarian experience, it it is becoming increasingly popular among tourist as well, especially those who visit during the cold months.

One fine example, the Gellért Baths (below)  in Budapest, is situated on the backside of the Gellert Hotel building. Its baths are perceived to be the most elegant and prominent of all the outdoor pools and baths in Budapest. The indoor spa features Art Nouveau architecture, warm pools, steam rooms, and saunas.

Another of the city’s famous ones, the Széchenyi Baths (top image), is in Heroes’ Square in the Városliget. This complex happens to be one of the largest in Europe, and it offers a network of steam rooms and hot tubs coupled with outdoor pools in a neo-Baroque courtyard that offers a distinct atmosphere during the winter.

Finally, Rudas Baths (above) is in Erzsébet híd, near the Buda bridgehead. The baths are only for men, but the outdoor pool is open to both genders.
