According to a new survey by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), the number of visitors to Greek museums and archaeological sites saw incredible increases as of 2018. Some 18.6 million people visited the attractions, and revenues were also drastically increased.
For the twelve-month period starting in January of 2018, there was an increase of 9.8 percent in the number of visitors to museums, and a 12.8 percent increase in the relevant receipts, compared to the previous year.
The report also revealed the most popular museums, with the Acropolis museum and the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the Heraklion Archaeological museum on Crete island and Delphi Archaeological Museum in central Greece taking top honors.
As regards archaeological sites, during the twelve-month period from January to December 2018, an increase of 13.8 percent was recorded in the number of visitors, while a 12.5 percent increase in the relevant receipts, in comparison with the corresponding period of 2017, ELSTAT announced.
The Acropolis hill of Athens, Epidaurus and Mycenae in Peloponnese peninsula, Knossos on Crete and Lindos on Rhodes island were among the most popular archaeological sites last year, the survey showed.
