Since 1995, the Christopher Summer Festival in Vilnius has offered tourists and residents alike some of the best classical music performances in Lithuania. Keeping up with the tradition, the 2011 edition of the festival continues to bring some of the best performers from Lithuania and other countries around the world, on hollowed ground, at St Catherine’s Church, Vilnius’ trademark peach baroque style.
Tomorrow, at 19:00 local hours, the sounds of the exotic charango will be heard for the first time here in Lithuania, inside the church that host most of the events of the festival. Performing, Patricio Zeoli and José Hernán Cibilis, both from Germany. The program will feature composer Ariel Ramirez’s Misa Criolla (Creole Mass), created in 1963, combining religious art with South American rhythms.
More guitar on August 7, but this time in Šešuolėlių dvaras, Širvintos, featuring Belgian trio “Luz de Luna” with a mixture of world music, classical and jazz sounds in a program of original compositions, improvisations on classical and Latin American music themes, and more.
The guitar gets mysterious on August 11, back at St. Catherine Church in Vilnius, with Lithuanian guitarist Martynas Kuliavas, who will be launching his first solo album, with older favorites and new compositions performed on acoustic and electric guitar.
These are just a few highlights from the festival. There is much more on the menu, exciting cultural events every other evening this August, till the festival culminates on September 4 in Šešuolėlių dvaras, Širvintos, with Lithuania's Golden Voices.
