More than 100 millimeters of rain has fallen in the Viannos area of Crete, causing extensive damage to parts of the road network and raising concerns about the Anapodaris River as severe weather continues across the island.
Residents and local authorities in Viannos remain on alert following intense rainfall that has brought more than 100 millimeters of water to the area.
Despite the rainfall, no major problems have been reported so far. However, extensive damage has been recorded on the road network, prompting local services to remain ready to respond as conditions develop.
For residents and anyone traveling through the area, damaged roads and continuing rainfall remain the immediate practical concerns.
Anapodaris River Under Close Watch
Attention is now focused on the Anapodaris River, as the substantial rainfall across the wider area has raised concerns about a possible overflow.
The situation could worsen if heavy rainfall continues, with authorities closely monitoring water levels and conditions in the surrounding area.
The concern is particularly relevant for communities and roads near the river, where additional rainfall could further increase runoff.
More Severe Weather Still Expected
The immediate situation is not considered over.
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service has updated its Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena, forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms across Crete on Saturday, with conditions expected to gradually weaken from the evening.
Crete also remains under Red Code Civil Protection readiness as authorities prepare for the continued impact of the severe weather.
Officials have urged residents to limit unnecessary travel, particularly while roads and ground conditions remain affected by the accumulated rainfall.
