The US’s decision to lift the travel warning for Tunisia is a huge positive for that country and a vote of confidence for interim Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa. Tunisia’s recent problems with unrest aside, Tunis and other destinations there have long been on many a traveler’s “bucket list” of things to see.

Speaking with the press during a visit to New York recently, the interim PM outlined how the recent travel advisory update sends a positive message about his country. Jomaa spoke to the US-Tunisia Strategic Dialogue about the market for American tourism in his country. A recent US State Department press release previewed Jomaa’s talk with President Obama, as well as the first-ever U.S.-Tunisia Strategic Dialogue.
Prime Minister also conferred with Chairman of the Board of Directors of Google Technology Centre Eric Schmidt. Additionally, just yesterday the PM told Magharebia “that his visit to the US had achieved its goals.” Jomaa’s US trip came just after a Gulf trip where he sought aid for the Tunisian economy and state budget in the face of a steep budget deficit.
Among Tunisia’s most visited touristic attractions are its cosmopolitan capital city of Tunis, the ancient ruins of Carthage, the Muslim and Jewish quarters of Jerba, and especially the coastal resorts outside of Monastir.
