  • Heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in the Minoa Pediada Municipality.
  • Roads in Thrapsano, especially toward Apostoli, were submerged and closed.
  • Local authorities scrambled to manage the crisis and mitigate damage.
  • Mayor Vasilis Kegeroglou criticized officials for rejecting flood control plans.
  • Nearby areas also reported similar issues due to the extreme weather.

Unrelenting rainfall in Minoa Pediada turned parts of the region into a mess, with Thrapsano facing the brunt of the storm. The road leading to Apostoli village became impassable, with water stretching across the pavement’s width. Authorities had no choice but to shut it down to prevent further chaos.

Meanwhile, other roads in the municipality also faced closures as the water continued to rise. The local government has been scrambling to address the situation, with reports suggesting similar flooding problems in neighbouring areas.

What Went Wrong

  • Unexpected Torrents: Close to 35 millimetres of rain caused significant disruption in a short period.
  • Unprepared Infrastructure: Critical flood-prevention measures weren’t implemented during prior development initiatives, including the new airport.
  • Localized Impact: Thrapsano suffered the most, but similar issues arose across Minoa Pediada.
  • Emergency Response: Municipal authorities raced to close affected roads and limit further hazards.

A Plea for Prevention, Not Just Cleanup

Amid the chaos, Mayor Vasilis Kegeroglou took to social media to express his frustration, blaming national infrastructure authorities for ignoring the need for permanent flood-prevention measures. His statement struck a nerve as he declared:

“With just 35 millimeters of rain, severe flooding is triggered near the airport! And yet, the responsible authorities, including the Ministry of Infrastructure, still refuse to acknowledge the clear need for flood control measures alongside airport construction!”

According to Kegeroglou, preventative action has long been dismissed as unnecessary—a costly oversight that locals now face.

Photos emerging from Thrapsano showcase submerged streets, blocked passageways, and stranded vehicles left after the storm. These visuals underline the significance of better infrastructure to handle increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
