Coming up Friday, September 7th, the annual Carob Festival takes place in Pegeia Village. Scheduled to begin at 19:30, this year’s event features artists Yannis Sofillas and Maria Carlaki.
A 7th iteration of the annual festival dedicated to carob offers visitors a chance to experience the sacred, magical landscape surrounding the square of the church of Saint George of Pegia, and the traditions that make this part of Cyprus so special.
Situated just 14 kilometers North of Paphos, Pegeia sits on the steep slopes of the coastal hills overlooking Coral Bay. One legend of old Pegeia is played out to this day. Since villagers once had to draw drinking water from a nearby spring, tt is said that to drink the Pegeia spring water made the girls beautiful. There are several songs sung to carry on this legend and the tradition of vrisi, like the ‘Spring of Pegeia Woman’ is still sung today.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to watch the preparation of Cypriot traditional handmade products, preparation of Cypriot fayre, traditional carob sweets, fresh Anari (cottage cheese) with carob syrup, resi, zivania distillery.
Entrance to the festival is free, and visitors will have the opportunity to taste and buy traditional Cyprus foods and drinks.
