The annual Elos Chestnut Harvest and Festival is scheduled to take place October 21st, after last year’s cancellation on account of a local villager’s death. Organizers this year promise to make up for lost time with live music, folk dances, and plenty of raki and wine to go along with traditional chestnut recipes.
Fall is a special season on Crete, it’s the time of harvests and the festivals that go along. Grape harvesting, wine and raki making, and of course the Elos Chestnut Festival in the mountains just 30 minutes south of Kissamos.
The 2018 festival will show off all the traditional costumes, competitions, and tasty dishes prepared by villagers and locals from the surrounds. This year the fest will begin on Saturday at 17:30 and Sunday beginning from 12:00.
The village of Elos is surrounded by chestnut trees, so the locals take great pride in demonstrating the magic of their chestnut harvest each year.
Visitors to this year’s events will also want to tour the old Venetian governor’s palace, and to check out the museum and mosaics dating from Roman times.
First time visitors to Elos will also be interested in the famous Monastery of Chrissoskalitissa, and the world famous beach of Elafonissi to the west.

According to the organizers, this year the festival starts on Saturday at 17:30 and Sunday beginning from 12:00.
