A retaining wall in Skaleta is getting a little more expensive and considerably more complicated.
The Municipality of Rethymno has signed a supplementary contract worth €62,885.92, bringing the total under the original contract to € 390,136.41. The extra money will cover additional safety work on the retaining wall along the dead-end coastal road, between the “Ilios” taverna and the chapel of Agios Nikolaos.
The supplementary works include strengthening the wall’s foundations against wave undermining, filling the entire height of the wall with concrete-bound stone rather than excavation material, and installing railings along the wall and the staircase leading down to the beach.
In other words, the wall is getting a stronger foundation, a heavier fill and a safety railing, because apparently even a retaining wall on the Cretan coast needs to be prepared for battle.
The supplementary contract was signed at Rethymno Town Hall by Mayor Giorgis H. Marinakis and the contractor’s representative, Dimitris Koutrakis. Deputy Mayor for Technical Works, Planning, Traffic and Municipal Property Angelos Malas and Deputy Director of the Municipality’s Technical Services Marianna Markoulaki were also present.
There is, however, one small complication. The work has been temporarily suspended for the tourist season. It is expected to resume on November 2, 2026.
So, after nearly €453,000 in contracts, the wall will now have to wait until the tourists leave before it is meant to be.
