Sitia Beach Gets Seatrac Access for Swimmers With Disabilities

The new Seatrac system is now operational at Sitia beach, allowing wheelchair users independent, dignified access to the sea.

Sitia’s main coast now offers unhindered sea access to residents and visitors with mobility impairments following the completion of a Seatrac system installation. The project overcame significant administrative hurdles and longer-than-expected procedures to ensure full inclusion along the shoreline. Mayor Giorgos Zervakis, joined by Deputy Mayor of Finance, Administration, IT, Sports, and Geopark Kostis Lymperiou, inspected the setup on site.

Salt air and rolling waves now meet a ramp designed to restore autonomy to bathers who previously faced insurmountable barriers on the sand. The municipal authority framed the project as a baseline obligation to civic dignity rather than an amenity, pointing toward expanding accessible public spaces across the region.

“Ensuring equal opportunities, accessibility, and inclusion are priorities for every modern society,” said Mayor Giorgos Zervakis. “The creation of accessible infrastructure does not concern only people with disabilities, but overall the quality of life and respect for the rights of all citizens. The present Municipal Authority continues to work for an inclusive city and Municipality, with more accessible infrastructure and equal opportunities for every citizen.”
