Santorini Experience Comes to Oia and Fira in October

Santorini Municipality, Municipal Sports Cultural & Environmental Organization in Santorini (DAPPOS), and the award-winning Group of Active Media organize the ultimate event of the fall for lovers of sports: the Santorini Experience. The event will be held under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization and the Hellenic Swimming Federation. (KOE)

Taking place in the first week of October 2017, from 6 to 8, the event includes open water swimming and running along the cliffs overlooking the caldera from Oia to Fira and back. All running routes start and finish at the Oia desalination plant. Various running routes (5km “Aristides Alafouzos,” 10km, 15km) are planned on the path that connects Oia with Fira overlooking the Caldera. According to the official press release:

This year’ s routes have been selected by the former marathon runner, holder of national best performance on the classical route, running coach, manager of All About Running and technical director of the event in running, Nikos Polias.

Swiming routes were planned by the Federal Technical coach of Swimming, together with Olympic and World medals winner in open water swimming Nikos Gemelos, Spyros Gianniotis and World Champion in open water swimming, Kelly Araouzou, as well as other open water swimming athletes like Antonis Fokaidis, Giorgos Arniakos, and Dimitris Negris. The Santorini Experience open water swimming route starts in the harbor of the volcano and ends at the pier of the old port of Fira. There are no age categories, so swimmers of all ages can compete against the clock. Professional and amateur swimmers will be able to sense the eruptive atmosphere of the volcano with the impressive view of the island in front of them.
