Samaria Gorge Remains Closed to Tourists

Samaria Gorge (Φαράγγι Σαμαριάς) remains closed today after a 4.9 quake injured a 45-year-old Spanish hiker last Sunday. The hiker’s leg was amputated on-site, and the tourist was later transported to the Agios Georgios General Hospital of Chania, where he remains in critical condition.

In a bid to prioritize the safety of hikers and tourists, Deputy Regional Governor of Chania, Nikos Kalogeris, took a significant step by ordering the temporary closure of all gorges in the region. The closure aims to allow authorities to assess the safety measures in place and undertake any necessary improvements to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The Greek island of Crete has temporarily closed popular mountain gorges for hikers after an earthquake caused a rockslide, seriously injuring a Spanish tourist. Following a magnitude 4.9 earthquake that shook the region, the closure of the Samaria Gorge in southwest Crete, along with other gorges in the White Mountain range, was ordered last Monday.

As a result of the tremor, over 600 people were evacuated from the 16-kilometer (10-mile) Samaria hiking trail. A 45-year-old Spanish hiker, whose right leg required amputation, was airlifted to a state hospital in the port city of Chania. Doctors have reported his condition as critical. The Samaria Gorge, which is part of a nature reserve, is open to visitors from May to October and is closed during inclement weather.

The Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization has declared that, as a result of the ongoing series of earthquakes in the broader region of the White Mountains National Forest, the Samaria Gorge will not be accessible to visitors today and on Sunday (19/8). It is worth noting that the Gorge has been closed since last Sunday, following the advice of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, as well as the seismologists from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). These experts are closely monitoring the development of the aftershocks following the 4.9 Richter earthquake that occurred in the municipality of Kantanos-Selino area.

This decision will allow authorities to conduct thorough safety inspections, identify potential risks, and implement appropriate measures to prevent accidents. The closure will remain in effect until further notice, ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken before reopening the gorges to the public.

The safety of hikers and tourists is of utmost importance to the local government. To ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all, authorities are working diligently to enhance safety measures across the region’s gorges. This includes evaluating existing infrastructure, improving signage, and considering the implementation of additional safety features where necessary. By proactively addressing these concerns, the aim is to prevent accidents and create a safer environment for hikers and visitors.

The closure of the gorges in the Chania region following the injury of a Spanish hiker in Samaria Gorge has been a necessary step in prioritizing safety. Deputy Regional Governor Nikos Kalogeris’ decision demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the well-being of hikers and tourists. By taking the time to evaluate and enhance safety measures, authorities aim to prevent future incidents and create a secure environment for all who embark on the breathtaking hiking trails of Chania. As the authorities work diligently towards these improvements, it is hoped that the gorges will reopen soon, offering visitors an unforgettable experience while safeguarding their well-being.
