Planes, trains, buses and cars are facing major delays due to bad weather all across Romania, as snow continues to fall. The country has been bouncing between heavy snows and blizzards and waves of cold weather. The -10 Celsius daytime average have helped turn the snow into blocks of ice, making clearing the roads and airports even harder.
Vrancea County (Moldova region, South-East part of the country) is operating under a state of emergency enforced by Romanian authorities. About 60,000 people, the vast majority living in rural areas, are stranded because of the heavy snows.
At this time, 10 national roads and the highway from Bucharest to Constanta are closed, driving being extremely difficult on dozens of others. 16 airports are facing long delays and canceled flights because of the weather: Arad, Bacau, Baia Mare, Bucharest – both Baneasa and Henri Coanda -, Cluj, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Oradea, Satu Mare, Sibiu, Suceava, Targu Mures, Timisoara and Tulcea. Another 5 ports have also been closed – Bechet, Calafat, Drobeta Turnu Severin, Moldova Veche and Orsova.
The weather is bound to get even worse, with more snowfalls being forecast from Sunday through Monday. More roads and highways will be closed as a result, while plane flights and trains will most likely be canceled over the next few days. If you were planning to travel to Romania, we advise you either postpone your trip for a little longer, or that you get ready for bad weather.
