The search for 71-year-old Nikos Chaldiadakis, the experienced windsurfer who disappeared off the coast of Heraklion on Monday, has ended in tragedy. His body was found at sea near Gouves on Thursday afternoon and was subsequently identified.
For his friends, however, Nikos is not remembered as a name in a Coast Guard report or as the subject of a days-long search.
He is remembered on the beach, in the sun, with friends, dogs, boards and the sea.
A photograph shared by his friend Robert Voigt captures exactly that.
In the old photograph, Nikos stands beside his friend on a beach, smiling at the camera as a Dalmatian looks on. It is an ordinary summer moment, the kind of photograph people take without imagining that one day it will become something precious.
Voigt shared the photograph after Nikos was found, writing:
“By my friend. One day we will surf together the endless Waves in Heaven.”
Nikos Chaldiadakis Loved the Sea
Nikos entered the sea alone around midday on Monday, August 31, carrying his surfboard. He was an experienced windsurfer and had gone out for what should have been another day on the water.
When he failed to return, concern quickly turned into a major search operation.
The Hellenic Coast Guard and supporting agencies searched the waters around Heraklion for several days. His board and rig were eventually located, but there was no sign of Nikos.
Then, on Thursday afternoon, his body was found floating in the sea off Gouves, near a well-known hotel.
The discovery brought an end to the uncertainty that his family and friends had endured since Monday.
A Friend’s Farewell
For those who knew Nikos, the photograph shared by Voigt says more than an official announcement ever could.
There is nothing solemn about the picture. Two friends are simply enjoying themselves on the beach, caught in an ordinary moment of a life spent around the sea.
That is how a friend chose to remember him.
“Que vaya con Dios,” Voigt wrote.
May he go with God.
And then came the words that perhaps say everything:
“One day we will surf together the endless Waves in Heaven.”
The Sea Gave No Easy Answer
The search had continued for days as friends, rescuers and authorities hoped Nikos would somehow be found alive.
Instead, his family and friends were left with the news everyone had feared.
