The Municipality of Rethymno is offering free Greek language lessons to migrants living in the city, with three classes covering beginner, advanced, and Arabic-speaking learners.
The program is being organized by the municipality’s Social Service through the Community Center and is designed to support everyday communication, social integration and participation in local community life.
Classes will begin on October 13, 2026, and will continue for six months. They will be held at the Community Center’s Intercultural Mediation Office at 8 Vernardou Street in Rethymno’s Old Town, next to the Rethymno Conservatory.
Three different groups will operate during the program.
A beginner-level class for members of the Indian community will meet every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The class will be taught by educator Roula Koumentakakou.
An advanced Greek class open to migrants of all nationalities will meet every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., also taught by Koumentakakou. The course is intended for participants who already have basic knowledge of Greek and want to further develop their language skills.
A third class is aimed at Arabic-speaking migrants, with an emphasis on everyday communication and practical use of the Greek language. It will meet every Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be taught by Azer Ekramy, the Community Center’s Intercultural Mediator.
The municipality said the courses form part of its efforts to promote inclusion and social cohesion and to help migrants participate more actively in the local community.
