This month in Serbia: Pudarski dani (Vineyard Guards Days)

Coming to rural Serbia September 18th through 20th to Irig, the “Pudarski dani” is one of the region’s most fascinating and authentic wine events.

According to tradition, PUDAR is a vineyard guard pitted against starlings and other vineyard thieves of all sorts bent on destroying the harvest. Through a procession of rattling and using clappers like animated scarecrows, the guards war off those vermin. And just in time for the grape harvest in late September.

This year, as in the past, visitors to the festival witness a parade on the streets of Irig, and perhaps even a ride in a horse drawn cart through town. Guests and locals partake of Pudar stew made of poultry meat cooked in a small cauldron. Other authentic Serbian dishes and libations are served too, along with wine tasting from among the region’s finest vineyards and cellars.
