More Wine Events Coming to the Villages of Rethymno This Weekend

In celebration of the events for the distinction of Rethymno as  European Wine City 2018 by the RECEVIN European Wine Cities Network, the Rethymno-Recevin Team, in cooperation with the Municipality of Amari and the villages of Nikiforos Fokas, has prepared a two-day wine event, dedicated to the villages and the hinterland, on the 2nd and 3rd November 2018.

Sponsored by La Grotta Boutique Wine Hotel, the event extends the activities of the Recevin Team outside the city of Rethymno, this event is perfect for all wine-lovers and hinterland producers as they will have the opportunity to be informed, to exchange experiences and practices and to submit their questions to all the invited speakers.

Moreover, the well-known celebration of Saint George the Methystis with the opening of the barrels of fresh wines will take place. This celebration is carried out in collaboration with the Cultural Associations of Malaki and Argyroupoli, and the following tour of places of historical and wine interest is a great opportunity for every visitor to enjoy the history of the Cretan Vineyards along with the exceptional nature of the hinterland.

Friday, 2nd November 2018

18:00:  Town hall of Agia Fotini, Amari

1. Open discussion-presentation: “Modern vine cultivation practices”

Speaker: Ilias Korkas, University of West Attica

Today the production philosophy changed from a high-performance practice to producing high-quality products, so that we accept lower yields as a consequence. When quality wine cannot be made from poor quality grapes and when the grape is affected by many factors, viticulture requires special cultivation practices.

2. Open discussion-presentation: “The vinification in simple words”

Speaker: Ioannis Paraskevopoulos, University of West Attica

A brief description of the white and red vinification techniques. What we have to do but, also – and most importantly – what must avoid!

3. Open discussion-presentation: “The Minoan wine and the Minoan Palatial Centre of Monastiraki”

Speaker: Athanasia Kanta, archaeologist

08:00-10:30: Divine Mass at St. George’s chapel in Ano Malaki

10:30-12:30: The opening of barrels of fresh wines andamateur winemaking contest in the same place (St. George’s chapel)

Anyone who wants to participate in the contest, must bring a sample of fresh wine until 10:00 in the place of the chapel

12:30: Culture and wine tour in the area of Ano and Kato Malaki. Guide: Stelios Manolioudis, geologist and researcher of wine production areas.
