The extensive search efforts for a 71-year-old surfer in the Heraklion region have concluded in the most tragic manner possible.

The man was last seen entering the sea with his surfboard around midday on Monday, August 31. When he failed to return, alarms were immediately raised, prompting a massive, multi-day search-and-rescue operation across the coastal waters of Heraklion.

Despite the tireless efforts of the Hellenic Coast Guard (Limeniko) and supporting agencies, the man was found deceased on Thursday afternoon. His body was discovered floating in the sea near a well-known hotel on Gouves beach. Authorities have since formally identified the remains, bringing a heartbreaking end to the days of uncertainty for his family and loved ones.

Que vaya con Dios. 🕊️

Our deepest condolences to his family, his friends, and everyone who knew him. We searched the sea, hoping to bring him home safely. Sadly, this was not the ending we prayed for.

May he rest in peace.
