Mark Rothko Art Center Opens in Daugavpils, Latvia

A brand new art center has opened in Daugavpils, Latvia. The multi-million euro Mark Rothko Art Center, a state-of-the-art venue dedicated to the local artist, is a welcome new attraction for visitors to the country.

Situated within Daugavpols’ historic fortress grounds, the center will exhibit not only works by the famous Latvian Rothko, but permanent and rotating exhibits dedicated to abstract and impressionistic art. The 5000 square meter facility already boasts of some 200 plus pieces of impressionistic art, and the multi-functional contemporary arts complex, will shortly become a key educational institution in the city as well.

For those unfamiliar, Rothko was an artist of Latvian-Jewish descent, born in Daugavpils back  in 1903. He emigrated to the US with his family at age 10, and later became one of America’s most famed painters.

Visitors will be greeted with a digital exhibition of Rothko’s life and career as well as a brief history of the city of Daugavpils at the center. The venue also hosts a variety of workshops and special events over the course of its first year, and visitors will also be welcomed to enjoy the lirbary and restaurant inside.
