Mandarmani Beach – A Gateway for New Couples, Families, & Friends

A romantic escape on the eve of Valentine’s, just few months after I got married, turned out to be a sweet treat for me and my husband. Both are working professionals, we did not have too many ‘Holidays’ available, so a visit to Mandarmani Beach seemed a good compromise. As it turned out it was the perfect romantic getaway from Kolkata.

Mandarmani is a beach resort in North Medinipur district of West Bengal. We started at 6am from Kolkata, and covered the 175 km by noon. Unexpectedly, the journey was an enjoyable sightseeing excursion in itself, especially the green spaces and villages over the last 15 or 20 kilometers. Then finally we reached the lovely sandy beaches of the Debraj Beach Resort. Wow!

What an exotic spot Mandarmani, from the onset.  It is surrounded by loneliness and serenity, and for couple wanting ultimate privacy, a veritable dream come true. Me, my husband, and the crystal sand and surf, unbelievable here in India. We spent hours walking and soaking up the serenity of the place. But, don’t be deceived, the resort is far from boring, lots of surprises awaited us. Unbeknown to me, my husband had secretly contacted the local florist, arranging for an awesome bouquet of flowers to compliment our awesome room at the resort.

Another great surprise lay only a kilometer away at a spot known as a ‘Mohana’ – a delta where the river meets the sea. Not many know that this stretch of beach is actually the longest one where you can drive your car – over 13km. But, we decided to do our best to walk it all. Neat the Mohana fishermen go about their daily routines, adding a little spice to an otherwise human bare landscape. For refreshment we partook of the local green coconut water sold by the farmers.

India has nearly 7000 kilometers of coastline. Visitors can partake of just about any beach activity imagineable too. From outright seclusion, like our Valentine trip to Mandarmani Beach, to high energy resort destinations like the legendary Baga Beach, there is truly something for everyone along India’s coast.
