In news from Malta, the Tourism Authority there has begun clamping down on the number of illegal restaurants. Already this year the authorities have made 613 inspections, compared with 608 made in all of 2013. Establishments without proper licensing and in breach of other regulations are being forced to either close or remedy their situation.

So called “farmhouse restaurants” on the Island have been a problem reported ever increasingly, even despite enforcement efforts made to bring those into compliance over the last few years. Now, monitoring these “irregular establishments” for compliance, has become the status quo for the MTA.
Last March, the MTA noted there were more than 70 restaurants on the Island operating illegally. The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association estimated the numbers to be even higher. That entity having received ongoing complaints of establishments out of compliance, or in some way outside legitimate business practices. This report via the Times of Malta illuminates the story.
