Makarska Is a Christmas Town

It’s Christmas in the small town on the Adriatic coast, and it’s been since St. Nicholas’ day. Makarska is a Christmas Town every year, a tradition they started in 2010, a tradition most likely to continue for years to come.

The 2010 edition was a success, and in 2011, the organizers enhanced the programme with more events, including live music, theater, caroling, workshops and even more programming for children, who, as a year before, were the main concern. For residents and tourists alike, Makarska’s Christmas Town represents an occasion to enjoy an authentic Christmas atmosphere; to get to know local traditions and cuisine; to buy original handicrafts; and to gather around the Christmas tree joyfully drinking mulled wine, tee and punch.

There are 6 more days to enjoy the festive event in Makarska, as the Christmas Town is scheduled to close its doors December 29, just two days before the New Year’s. The programme still includes daily concerts, and trade shows. For children, one of the most interesting features is the large nativity scene, executed by local craftsmen, according to local traditions. A Santa’s Workshop is also available, showing curious kids how toys are made, teach children how to make greeting cards, prepare gifts, make Christmas decorations and other goodies. The workshop is more substantial this year, compared to 2010 – and it is open daily from 9:30 to 11:00, and 17:00 to 19:00.

Today, Makarska is attempting to create the largest Christmas greeting card in Croatia – a 30 meters long creation to surpass last year’s 17 meter long card.
