India Celebrates Mahashivratri 2011

Visitors to India will have a rare treat in store with Mahashivratri being celebrated across the country. Millions of followers, and their visiting guests from other countries, will be on the march to see some of the tallest Shiva statues, giant wonders that not only honor Shiva, but leave onlookers entranced.

Shiva, otherwise known as the “Destroyer”, is celebrated by devotees on Maha Shivratri (the night of Shiva). Every year, on the 13th night and 14th day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon), millions take part in this fascinating ritual. Observing a  fast and offer prayers all night, the sacred book tell devotees to visit the temples on this sacred day – and finally break the fasting.

And for the traveler, aside the colorful rituals, just laying eyes on these wondrous statues is an unforgettable experience.

1. Shiva Kailash Nath Mahadev at Sanga in Nepal – 143 feet (43.5 meters)

2. Shiva at Murudeshwara in Karnataka, India – 122 feet (37 meters)

3. Shiva as Mangal Mahadev in Ganga Talao, Mauritius– 108 feet (33 meters)

4. Shiva of the Har-ki-Pauri in Uttarakhand, India – 100 feet (30.5 meters)

5. Shiva statue in Delhi, India – 74 feet (23 meters)

6. Shiva at Kemp Fort in Karnataka, India – 65 ft (19.81 meters)
