Greek souvlaki

Τhe town of Livadia in Viotia Prefecture, Central Greece has broken the Guinness Book of Records for the longest souvlaki ever cooked. The town famous for its rotisseries has shattered a previous record for meat skewering held by China.

On Monday, May 28th, citizens of Livada gathered in the town center to watch local volunteers lite the fire and placed the meat on the skewers, which was then cooked over charcoal. Guinness Book representatives were on hand to measure and record the souvlaki, which came in at 201 meters long. Now that’s souvlaki done the Greek way!

The record-breaking skewer was cooked by 30 people using over 150 kilos of charcoal and 300 kilos of meat, according to the news. The chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Viotia noted this was a huge event for Livadia, with global interest. “Now the small town of Livadia was heard worldwide, we broke the Guinness record and we are proud of it,” he said.

Livadia is the capital of the Boeotia regional district situated about 90 km (56 mi) north-west of Athens. In antiquity, the town was called Mideia, and was famous for the oracle of the god Trophonios. Today the town is known for its agriculture, and for its skill at creating gigantic souvlakis since a few days.
