The Legendfest: Istria’s Legends Come to Life in Pićan

Beginning today, the small town of Pićan is hosting one of the most celebrated events in the area: The Legendfest, a festival of folktales, myths and legends of Istria. The festivities are greatly enjoyed by the locals, and also by tourists, who have the opportunity to learn more about the local history and traditions, through interactive events that often invite public participation.

The festival, organized by the cultural association Val from Zagreb, is held since 2006, to enrich the local arts and culture scene, and to revive ancient traditions of Pićan. A local legend presents a fearless dragon terrorizing the villagers, burning their crops and their forests, striking fear all around.

Local theater companies and knights groups recreate the legend, and uncover the world of literary and folk stories of Istria with a varied programme of plays, song and dance.

A festival for young and old, an opportunity to relive the Medieval glory of Pićan, The Legendfest will bring many fairy tale characters to life: witches, fairies and pirates, knights and dragons, giants and much more. The main events take place on a central stage, but there are many performers presenting different aspects of local tradition and culture all through the city. Kids enjoy special workshops designed to educate and entertain them.
