Nobody gets excited about municipal vegetation management. It is not a festival. It is not a new beach bar. It is a bunch of guys with chainsaws and trimmers clearing bushes on the side of the road.

Here is the thing: when you are driving down a narrow Lasithi mountain road at dusk, trying to spot that one taverna your friend recommended, and suddenly a branch is not blocking your view of an oncoming tractor? That is the magic.
The Regional Unit of Lasithi is currently deploying crews across the provincial road network to cut branches and clear roadside vegetation. It is part of their ongoing road safety program, which is basically a fancy way of saying “we are making sure the roads do not try to kill you.”
Crete’s roads are beautiful, but they are also aggressive. Narrow lanes, blind corners, and vegetation that grows with the enthusiasm of a Cretan summer sun. When branches hang too low, or bushes creep onto the asphalt, three bad things happen:
- You cannot see oncoming traffic until it is literally honking at you.
- You cannot see road signs because a bougainvillea decided to swallow them whole.
- You have exactly zero margin for error if you need to swerve.
The crews are focusing on spots where visibility is compromised, cutting back branches and clearing the greenery that thinks it owns the road. It is preventative maintenance. It is the road equivalent of flossing your teeth: boring, but it prevents a catastrophic disaster later.
While the Regional Unit is doing its job, remember that road safety in Crete is a team sport.
- Do not park in blind corners: Just because you want that perfect photo of the sea does not mean you should block the entire lane on a hairpin turn.
- Respect the trimmed zones: If you see freshly cut branches on the side of the road, give the crews a mental high-five. They are working in the heat to keep the asphalt clear.
- Drive Like the Vegetation Is Still There: Just because the bushes are trimmed does not mean that a goat will not jump out from behind that rock.
